National Charity Model Search

There are many rewards for being involved in work that benefits charity, as the following two photographers will attest:

Dear Sam and NILMDTS team,

I am so grateful for the opportunity to participate in the National Charity Model Search. With the current shaky economy, I was more than a little nervous about the typical slow months for photography. When the announcement came about the Charity Model Search I was thrilled about the awesome prize potential for clients (and my studio, of course), but also thrilled that all the work was done for me with your marketing pieces!

I sent out the Charity Model email ad, had posters printed by my lab, postcards printed by Marathon Press, and I was off and running. The postcards and posters were placed in several places, a daycare center that I provide portraiture for, my hairdresser, a florist that I photograph for, my husband's business, and a Swim/Fitness center where I have done Charity food drive portrait sessions.

My phone immediately began ringing, and much to my dismay and delight, I got nothing done for two days (other than booking models, of course)! This campaign was MAGIC for my business and booked my Saturdays solid in January and February. I am a small business of one employee (me!), and the numbers may not be shocking for big business owners. However, I am thrilled with the results. I booked 36 sessions from this campaign and of those, sixteen of them had never been in my studio before, and four had just done big family sessions with me in November. Guess what? They couldn't pass up the portraits of their "model" even though we had just sold them big packages. I sold my largest portrait package ever out of this group including a 30x40 Gallery Wrap. Now this is by far my best investment in a marketing campaign ever (I only spent about $200 on the whole campaign for printed materials)!

Now for the emotionally rewarding part, one of the reasons I got so little done while scheduling appointments was because of the personal response from some of my clients. Several of my clients and some complete strangers called me to thank me for being a part of NILMDTS. This was the first time they had heard of the organization, and many of them have experienced personal loss or have helped family and friends through their loss. This was an outcome I wasn't expecting, and it touched me so deeply. Many people called just to say thank you and said they would go out to vote for my models even though their children were too old to participate. Wow! I have a connection with my clients that business alone could have never put there.

During this campaign I also received my first phone call to go to a family needing portraits for their stillborn son. I can only say that there is no way to describe how it feels to give this precious gift to these families in their time of loss. It still makes me cry, and I feel more strongly about this organization than I did on the day that I joined. I am so proud to be a part of this model search that has currently raised over $53,000 for NILMDTS. Thank you Sam and friends for being marketing geniuses. Give me a path and I will follow it. Most importantly, thank you Sam, Cheryl, and Maddux for providing the framework to give our gift to those who truly need it.

With a sincere heart,

And another letter writers says. . .

When word went out about the National Charity Model Search, our studio jumped at the chance to participate. From the very first email we received -- right at the end of December -- we hit the green light and downloaded all the pre-designed materials.

The pre-written press release, modified with our information, was submitted to a dozen or so PR sites. At the same time, we sent out an email to our customer base with a very special deal. We also posted it in our blog and on the Giving portion of our website. Our local NBC affiliate pulled the story and announced it on the 6pm news, and it was also picked up by Carolina Parent and our local newspaper.

By the end of the next day, we had 10 sessions booked.

On day two, we sent out very targeted messages to our commercial customers -- those that work with or around kids asking them to post our modified flyer or send it to their customers via email. That same day, we called all our top customers and offered them an even more extra special deal if they wanted to participate and, with just one exception, they all signed up.

On day three, our monthly newsletter went out, including an entire section on the Model Search, and we held our first three, 15-minute Model Search sessions. We offer single-subject, mini-sessions year round, at discounted prices exclusively for children under the age of 10, but with associate photographers, not me. Our customers like these types of sessions, and now they had a chance for a mini-session with me! That, plus the fact that they could participate in such a great cause pushed them to jump at the chance to do so now.

We have quite a few connections with local businesses too: dance schools, bagel shops, kids drop-in daycare places, pediatricians, etc. We posted the flyer in each of their locations (where possible) and in the front window of our studio. We continued to market the program throughout February, online and in our newsletters, on Facebook, Craigslist, and with mid-month updates on just the Model Search Participants and their "rankings."

We even designed our own "National Charity Model Search" poster with all OUR kids on it (with direct links to vote for them) as well as announced a National Charity Model Search wrap party for March 27th with cake and ice cream for all participants.

Click here to see the poster we built.

As of March 13, 2009, we had nearly 50 kids come through our studio and participate. While a few families opted not to purchase any photos for themselves, most did! We attribute our 25% increase in 2009 revenues (and 15% increase in February) to our participation in the National Charity Model Search!

Thanks!

If You're Going to San Francisco...

...be sure to bring your dancing shoes. Everything was super bright for such a hazy morning. We began the day trapped in the lower hotel parking lot, then pushed our stuff up the hills of San Fran.

Our crew gained a few extra pirates (Sam's trainer) who rallied at the wharf for lunch, while others braved the wild trolley ride to the outskirts of town to find vegan food.
The day brightened when Sandy presented an energetic seminar to a buzzing crowd.

We had a cluster of models at the show, including Isabella and Noah, a pair of siblings who helped Sandy demonstrate photographing siblings. Savannah, our other model, showed off her posing-and-having-fun skills.

After an extremely quick cleanup, we headed downtown to celebrate the HALF-WAY-through-the-tour mark with dance parties full of lost I.D.s and greasy pizza. *Disclaimer: Sam ate salad and steamed veggies.

San What? ...Jose

Waking up to the San Jose Valley was an incredible start to a beautiful and successful day of road pirating! The seminar was hosted in an incredible historic building, once a plantation home. The pirates were extra excited to shower in the huge showers. They were so big, we once again river danced!

It was only a few miles away that the pirates obtained fish'n'chips (*Disclaimer: Sam ate salad and steamed veggies.) and rollerblades (and although the blades are yet to be utilized, it was a huge success in their minds!)

And so began a very successful show and even more incredible surprise ending! Two darling sisters joined us for the live model session, Jessica and Sarah were a charming asset to the seminar and demonstrated the poses wonderfully.

Oooo L.A. La

Reveling in the perfect California sun, the pirates jumped off the ship to begin load-in. Shiver-me-timbers, the room was cold! We decided to soak in a bit more sun before the show began. Then next door, we found the hotdog-on-a-stick stand, where we stuffed ourselves with hotdogs, cheese and sugary lemonade. *Disclaimer: Sam ate salad and steamed veggies.

Although the room still felt like an icebox, Sandy used the opportunity to drink more tea. The night's models were a pair of sisters, Jean and Julia. They played dress up with lovely dresses and were ever so cute. Our other model, Ashton, was a great listener and glowed with excitement to play with Sandy!

The buccaneers managed to recruit many volunteer road pirates that night to help take everything down. However, one pirate realized that maybe some of her belongings were smuggled, and we tried to solve the “Mystery of the Missing iPhone.” Unsuccessful, we then sailed off northward to the next destination, San Jose!

Irvine A.K.A. Newport Beach

In celebration of a super unhealthy dinner the previous evening, the buccaneers spotted a Jamba Juice on the horizon and decided to drop in for an early breakfast. One pirate was unsatisfied with the plan, and strode off to find some rotten milk instead—yuck!

Set up was quick, and the ladies were off to soak their feet! Nothing like a good pedicure to take away the traveling blues!

Energized for load-in, we setup the tiny room in record time. Our models for the night were brother and sister. Jakob wowed the crowd, Emily looked lovely, and both allowed Sandy to demonstrate the candy technique in perfect form.

Happy St. Patrick's Day from San Diego!

The weather in San Diego was absolutely perfect and we couldn't wait to get outside and enjoy the sun. In fact, we decided to hold our tour meeting out by the pool.

Unfortunately, proper sun protection was not applied, and a couple of us ended up with some pretty good (or bad) sunburn.

Noelle was our model in San Diego. She was a real cutie and demonstrated all of the poses beautifully.

After the show, we were some very hungry pirates, and celebrated two birthdays with two birthday cakes. Bus driver Don's birthday was celebrated with a green cake, and Nate from GNP shared a chocolate birthday cake with us. (You can never have too much cake!)

After the cake feast we went hunting for some grub. When an In and Out Burger was spotted, we all started salivating. Sad times were had when we discovered that they closed five minutes before we got there. After finding the same sad story at the next three places we tried to eat, we eventually made a dinner of slightly burned popcorn (we are still figuring out the microwave settings) and cereal bars. *Disclaimer: Sam ate salad and steamed veggies.

A Strange Dream....

Somewhere between Memphis and Phoenix....

After many long rigorous hours working away on a moving bus, the road pirates found themselves extremely seasick and fatigued. So they made their way to their bunks for a midday nap.....

They awoke in a parking lot in an unknown city in an unknown state. Confused and disoriented, they decided to explore the land. They spied a marketplace and headed toward it. Entering thru a large shop, they were excited about the adventures ahead. They confidently strode toward the entrance to the main marketplace, only to discover that the way was barred by glass walls. Through the walls they could see palm trees and boarded storefronts. As the pirates began to panic, a native of the land came up and offered assistance.

The head pirate inquired, "Where are we?" and was given this answer:

While the answer was deeply philosophical, it did not help the pirates with their journey into the new land so they headed off to the nearby village.

Soon they came upon a place made entirely of cookies. The pirates gazed wonderously upon every cookie imaginable. They quickly stuffed their pockets with the baked goodies and made their way further into the village in search of a slightly more nutritious meal. When they came to the tavern, they were greeted by a beautiful witch who took an instant dislike to the rather scruffy, stinky hood-wearing, cookie-hording pirates. After an extremely long wait and icy stares from the gathering masses, the witch took the buccaneers to a tiny table in the dark back corner. The pirates quickly made their displeasure known and demanded a better more spacious dining area. The witch stomped off with no desire to help.

Just then, a white horse came galloping up to the table. From atop the horse a deep voice sounded and offered assistance to the weary travelers. "I saw you from afar and noticed your exquisite facial structure. Allow me to escort you to the king's banquet hall." The pirates paraded into the beautiful room and were seated at the main table. They were so grateful for the kindness showed to them, they requested the prince's presence for the meal. Sadly, he declined because he had a fence to build but he sent his squire in to care for them. The pirates were treated to a feast of oysters, steaks and rum. At the end of the meal, the prince returned to bid them farewell. He found himself smitten with the head pirate. He knelt before her and said, "I don't know who you are and I don't care. But if you ever find your way back here again, either by accident or by design, I would love to dine with you."

Although the gesture was very kind, the pirate declined as there was much more to be explored. She did impose on the prince and inquire where in the realm entertainment might be found for the travelers. The prince then hailed a rickety ship for the

Nashville

Our day in Nashville dawned early and not so bright.  When we awoke, we discovered that we had been spoiled by all the sunshine in our previous locales.  The day was gray, but we were all grateful that it wasn't raining.  We loaded in bright and early (much to the dismay of the guests in the hotel rooms that were right next to the tile floors we rolled across) and began set up.  The room was right next to the indoor pool, and while the smell of chlorine made taking a dip a very appealing thought, it was far overshadowed by the pull of Jack's BBQ in downtown Nashville.  Some of the pirates were lucky enough to stumble across it last year and it was definitely worth a repeat visit!

Our models in Nashville were adorable sisters, Averie & Ivie.  Sam was able to pull out lots of her techniques with these girls.  Connor was our other model.  He was quite the charmer and demonstrated the "boy poses" perfectly.

Walkin' in Memphis

We woke up in Memphis to the cold and the rain. It made the load in a bit of a challenge, but we suited up and got it done. We did learn that the tongue of the trailer is VERY slick when wet and caution should be used. There was also the usual silliness during set up when Brandon pulled out his “Red Baron” impression and had us all in stitches.

Our models were three sisters, Halie, Peyton and Addison. These girls are absolutely gorgeous! They were great listeners and we got some awesome images.

After the show, we had lots of help getting our stuff taken down so we could get on the road quickly for the long journey we have next. When we jumped on the bus, we discovered that we had had a visitor. There was a hip swiveling Elvis suctioned to the inside of the windshield. We aren’t sure where it came from (or how it got INSIDE the bus) but we think we have it narrowed down to either the Elvis convention that was also in the hotel or aliens.

Tots 2 Teens Seminar Tour Feedback

Now that the Tots 2 Teens tour is in full swing, we’re getting amazing feedback from seminar attendees.

This year, Sam started her tour in Denver, so her staff was able to see first hand how wonderful the show is. We’re not at all surprised by the positive comments were getting:

I just returned to Puerto Rico after attending the Tots2Teens seminar in Orlando. In one Word--AWESOME!

I really want to thank Sandy for taking the time to share her experiences and knowledge with us. Without a doubt, it was the best workshop I have attended!

Some workshops I have attended in the past were just fluff and a way for the photographer to become known. Sandy does not need that, and her desire to give back and share was more than obvious as soon as she began to speak. She shared real world knowledge that was inspirational and practical at the same time. She is very passionate about that too. What I loved the most is that I can apply everything she shared to my business.

Some people thought I was crazy for going because I had to flight from Puerto Rico to attend, but it was worth every penny.
I am already looking forward to next year!

Here's another great letter:

I'm sure Sam gets tons of emails just like this one, but after returning from her show tonight in Atlanta, I just wanted to send her a sincere "thank you." I soaked in every last word, and feel I can truly use all the tips and tricks that she so generously offered. I have a true passion for photography, and it's insanely refreshing to see Sam's big heart, hard work, and dedication payoff in her business and charities. Sam, thank you for following your dream, and giving me the inspiration to do the same.

And from another grateful attendee:

Sam, I really enjoyed the Tots to Teens show last night in Charlotte. It was a wonderful experience. I was the person that won the Metal Wall Mural. What a nice gift, I really didn't know what I was getting until I got home and looked it up. Just fantastic, Thank You.

PS: Wish I could attend the seminar again tonight, it was that good.

Gimme a break

After the first leg (has it only been a week??) was complete, all pirates on the bus were ready for our first break day.  It found us in San Antonio, Texas and everyone was super excited to get out and let off a little steam.  We were a little nervous when we woke up and looked out the window and discovered the bus was parked in a vacant lot in what appeared to be a "not so nice" area of the city.  Turns out we were actually across the street from the hotel and all was well.

We spent the morning catching up on some emails and phone calls and then headed out to explore the city.  We saw the Alamo, had some yummy sushi and walked along the famous Riverwalk.  Kristin, Natalie & Brandon took a river taxi to do their exploring while Sam, Dave, Kendall and Erin walked the whole thing.

The next day dawned bright and early and we headed over to
